Vodka Festival Vaporised – @savodkafestival becomes #vodkafestgate

Nearly 24 hours after the organisers of the SA Vodka Festival cancelled the show, 3 hours before the doors were to open, there is no official word from Monyetla, the organisers. I phoned the contact numbers, sent emails, to no avail.

What there has been is a promise that people that purchased tickets via Computicket would be refunded; apologies via @savodkafest and an invitation to a party at a Long Street bar.

It’s unacceptable.

In the world of social media companies need to act quickly. We have seen what happened with Woolies and the hummingbird and to a lesser degree, with #basculegate and others, the speed at which a story goes viral, the importance of competent PR and danger of an unprofessional approach.

The Vodka companies, large and small, spent a lot of time, money and effort on the festival. I assume there are unpaid creditors – advertisers, display suppliers, marketing companies, and so on.

This is bad for the liquor industry, bad for Cape Town, bad for everyone involved.

I hope that the organisers come out soon with a statement – and payment for everyone involved.

A lot of people are waiting….

  1. We have also been in touch with organizers and have been told that they have nothing to say until they release their official press release tomorrow. Looking through their twitter feed it looks like they were still running full steam ahead just a few hours before doors were supposed to open, giving away tickets. Were they the cause or did it surprise them too?
